Having recently read an article describing how to wear high waisted trousers, advising wearers to keep it simple and to discard all things Lanvin with their super cool silhouettes and retro modern designs, I figured I’d set the record straight and add my own two cents.
The 1920s had them. The 1950s had them. The 1980s most definitely had them and I am 100% sure the kids of Saved By the Bell had them, leaving the noughties as the only era not to fall head over heels in love with the high waisted attire…until 2012-2013 that is.
The high waisted trouser is a look that screams retro and instant classical menswear apparel. Thankfully it is a look easily adapted for the modern gent with an effortless update. Vivienne Westwood’s Anglomania offerings for example provide a more cutting edge option without the over voluminous tone frequently attributed to the pleated world of the high waisted trouser.
Statement belts and simple plain tees tucked in to create a tall silhouette are perfect for Viv’s high waisted threads. For me personally you can never go wrong with a bit of bling added in for maximum effect. A simple yet oh so effective gold medallion Versace inspired bracelet/cuff, an oversized ring or bold gold chain would make the world of a difference in upping the style stakes. Be careful not to go too OTT as the risk of resembling Rihanna’s lost hopes and dreams is extra high right now.
In strike contrast to Viv’s sleek and collected designs, Lanvin went all out and opted for volume. Go big or go home was the Lanvin motto. Dressing their male models in high waisted trousers in shades of minimal monochrome, presenting a Utilitarian image of bold style and a daring sense of exploration when it comes down to men’s tailoring. A hint of androgynous, punk rebel undertones ensure the feminine feel isn’t too overpowering with a striking look of confident liberal comfort as an added bonus.
Another fan favourite of the high waisted variety comes from the mind of the shape and structure wizard known simply as Rick Owens. Keeping it industrial with a workwear twist, Rick Owens displays how the modern man can rock the high waisted trouser any day of the week. Turtle neck sweaters, layered collared shirts and even the most casual of all, the wife beater. All take to the high waisted trouser like Miley Cyrus takes to a foam finger.
In conclusion the high waisted trouser is back, more voluminous and more confident than ever before and hopefully it is here to stay for a significantly style impressionable amount of time. Thanks for reading. Keep it high waisted.
