It's Disney Bitch!

It has been well over 15 years since I saw my first Walt Disney film on the old format known as VHS. It was not the awe inducing Lion King. It was not the exotic adventure Aladdin. It was in fact the feminine tale of forbidden love that was the Little Mermaid. And I bloody adored it. Much to the dismay of my Newcastle United FC adoring Father…who even to this day still brings it up. I may have also had a doll…but who else was going to seduce my heroic action man in the backseat of his plastic jeep than a mermaid made human with fire red hair? I know…I have issues.

The Little Mermaid was of course released in 1989. The year of my birth so clearly it was fate. Fast forward to 2013 and still to this very day I cannot get enough of Sebastian, Flounder and co. Alongside the Lion King and Hercules of course. It is not surprising then to discover I enjoy wearing the odd Disney inspired piece of attire.

My current favourites coming from the eclectic range going by the name of Disney Couture.   A cutting edge and urban infused range of jewellery designs influenced by some of the most iconic Disney characters and Walt Disney films in the world. Disney couture jewellery captures the Disney magic in a range of sophisticated designs ranging in everything from oversized necklaces to Masonic rings and statement bracelets. And I kinda love it all.

Think Pirates of the Caribbean gold statement skull rings. Mickey Mouse chain necklaces, rings and matching bracelets. Gold plated castles in both pendant and ring designs. Not to mention retro image detailed watches. One of which I managed to find in my bag of tricks, tucked away at the back of my wardrobe. My Donald Duck wristwatch from times gone by. Added bonus…it still fits.

As ever when I stumble upon something I like, I take to the one place I regard as my Aladdin’s Cave. Disney related pun intended. I am of course talking about eBay and upon typing the word ‘Disney’ into the clothing and accessories search bar, a world of possibilities magically appears.

Home to vintage, urban sweatshirts featuring modern motifs, snapback caps, cosmic print and bleached reworked Disney slogan t-shirts, eBay really is the King of the Jungle when it comes to Disney apparel. All of which include the odd hilarious Star Wars introduced tongue and cheek piece following the revelation of Disney’s involvement in the next Star Wars film, Episode Seven.

Three pieces in particular I am currently attempting to own are the Fantasia galaxy print vintage t-shirt, an Obey motif Mickey Mouse jumper and a Disney Couture Mickey Mouse ring. All of which will belong to me if I can outbid the competition. Competition I am 100% sure is the same person across all three pieces. Word of advice…back the hell off. And to quote a certain Hercules ‘Giving up is for rookies.’

I will now leave you with one piece of advice I learned from my dear Ariel (the Little Mermaid for those who grew up in a stable home), who once upon a time, after fruiting about in her Ocean to her cave of human treasures, says the words “I just don’t see how a world that can make such beautiful things could be bad?”. The answer is that when these beautiful things are Disney related…the world is not actually that bad Ariel.

The Disney Couture jewellery range is currently on sale at Asos.com with many items reduced to a fraction of the original price.
