GIVENCHY SS14: The Ghost In the Machine
Lookbook

Wed. 3. July.
Love it or hate it, man truly met machine in Givenchy’s march of the man-droid.
Forget the stars and shark heads, forget gothic religious iconography and forget birds of paradise, because Riccardo Tisci’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection for Givenchy menswear has gone digital. Referred to as ‘Nerd Africa’ by Tisci, robotic, futuristic-art-tech, electronic circuit prints and wire switchboard patterns were seen in abundance this week on the runway in Paris, showing a modern warrior of tomorrow’s scientific and technological world with a tribal twist.
The intergalactic troop/tribesman theme was a refreshing vibrant surprise from Tisci who generally churns out rather dark and sinister, doom and gloom garments, with a distinct techno vibe of the 70s thrown in keeping the signature sports luxe infused silhouettes and layered opulent shapes we have come to expect and embrace from the house that Givenchy built.
The white, clerical and medical pieces being of particular interest, juxtaposed with the digital graphic prints in both oversized and form fitted designs representing an African-geek-chic take on current, urban street wear alongside a skatewear attitude. Sheer panelled trousers, leather trimmed shorts, stone organza biker jackets and the Tribal-Tech Queen head prints were of particular interest among the 54 looks showcased. It was bizarre, it was peculiar but all in all it was simply brilliant creating a fantastic display of modern day mechanics in an opulent and print-tastic display of contemporary, cutting-edge design.
