Battle of the Boybands

Boybands were out in force on Tuesday evening as the UK’s successful offerings of talented young stars turned up in style to rock the red carpet for world dominators known as One Direction. 1D to those who like things simplified or Liam, Zayn, Louis, Niall and Harry for those who know every single thing about them…or if you just happened to pick up the unnecessary cover issues of last month’s GQ.
The X-Factor hopefuls turned superstar sensations appeared at Leicester Square in London for the red carpet premiere of their new film This Is Us. Say what you want about the 1D lads but they know how to dress and more importantly, they know how to dress well and in a concise, cohesive manner. Donning a monochromatic format for their big screen debut, the boys looked slicker than your average in cool, contemporary and classic attire all rolled into one 1D style fest.
Louis and Liam made an impression in statement jackets in the form of a cropped double breasted blazer with the latter rocking a form fitting leather biker jacket. Best dressed is awarded to recently engaged Zayn who pulled on a long, collarless sleek overcoat from innovative designer Lee Roach, complete with a textured leather vest insert. Niall and Harry aren’t worthy of a mention.
But the 1D lads weren’t the only ones out to showcase their own taste in current style trends, the McFly boys Tom, Harry, Dougie and Danny kept it casual and calm tailoring their individual looks to their own individual tastes. Keeping it fully festival in t-shirts, skinny jeans and fitted jackets. The standout look arrived from quirky geek chic Tom in his fashion forward specs, denim jacket and tartan shirt tied at the waist for added detail. Dougie also represented, rocking a statement headband with an oversized checked shirt worn loosely alongside an equally oversized leather jacket.
Even Britain’s Got Talent trio Loveable Rogues were there to provide a more urban youthful take via simplistic Sports Luxe inspired pieces donning vibrant trainers mixing them with minimal white and black t-shirts, shirts, jumpers and blazers for an exciting street style effect. Including the odd gold chain thrown in for full emphasis.
Of course there’s always one who doesn’t quite get it, the soon to dissolve JLS as members Ashton, Marvin and Oritse looked like three completely separate entities. Ashton looked rather funky and trend savvy. Marvin opted for a dapper, smart, sophisticated tailored approach. While Oritse seemed rather confused and slightly lost in it all. An oddly shaped studded jacket, a weird leather panelled tee and not so complimentary leather pocket trousers. Someone has clearly taken the JLS split to heart and decided to give up on wearing clothes that fit or even look remotely comfortable.
1D’s new 3D documentary film ‘This Is Us’ opens in cinemas August 29.
